"If you love the Brazilian Funk and sounds of modern dance floor jazz, you must pick up On The Right Track compiled by John Kong on Do Right Music. This is an amazing compilation of broken beat gems sure to satisfy those who like a little spice in their mix, keep an eye out for this label."

BIDJ magazine February 2003

The follow-up to Keb Darge's comp 'Funk For the 21st Century', the release that put John Kong's Do Right! label on the map, and it's the main man himself at the helm for this equally smart second release. The LP's tag line is pretty accurate too, reading 'bossa, fusion, and jazz shuffles', with the album laying down both boundary-bending new recordings and essential favourites. Opening track 'X-Perience' from Grupo X and Lisa Millet is sure to instantly grab anyone with a penchant for such flavas, that track falling into the latter category, while exclusive to the LP are new cuts from Mitchell & Dewbury and Moonstarr & John Kong. Are they on the right track? Most definitely! - Lurch

Rating: ***

Toronto D.J., promoter, and now record-label head, John Kong, has put together a collection of music that probably shouldn't be categorized as "world." At least, no more than it should be slugged "jazz." Although Latin and Brazilian sounds as well as jazz are the bedrock of this music, it's only via their mutual danceability that these tracks exist at all. The results are left-of-centre club music at its most interesting. For example, Airto's Tombo in 7/4 receives bold new treatment in the hands of A Bossa Electrica, who hail not from Brazil but Sweden. Indeed, Brazilian grooves are in abundance with the international club hit Meu Samba, product of a Brazilian producer and a German band, along with another Brazilian number from Strasbourg's Nu Tropic. Oddest of all fusions is the track by Finnish "gothic folk jazz" outfit Kuusumun Profeetta, who proffer a gentle, faintly spooky piece you might (almost) waltz to. For listenable dance music, this is definitely On the Right Track.

Toronto tastemaker John Kong sets the record straight with a compilation on his own label Do Right! Music. As a member of the famed Movement Collective, his ear for prime tracks has allowed him to foster a label that specializes in dancefloor jazz, Latin and Brazilian, and broken-beat flavours based right out of T.O. Great contributions, from Ben Mitchell and Russ Dewbury's "Jazz Is Your Life" to Swell Session's "Music in Her Eyes," set this comp apart immediately, while exclusives from Hand Polished and Moonstar and Kong show that we've got some aces of our own. Also features tracks from Groupo-X, the Vogado Projects and A Bossa Electrica, rounding out some great sounds from a Canadian label to watch. 8.5/10 (Scott C)

On The Right Track Sampler

Only one release down the line and things seem to be shaping up 'right and nice' for Canada's Do Right! And this cheeky sampler from the latest compilation shows why. Take your pick from the pitch-shifting hip hop shuffle and broken jazz of Moonstarr and John Kong's 'Yesterdays Beginning', the carnival-esque Latin-jazz of Mitchell & Dewbury's "Jazz is Your Life', or the more aggressive, bass-heavy breakbeats of The Vogado Projects' 'Um?'. A little something for everyone, as they say. 3.5 (FS)

Firing new compilation from John Kong is one heavy selection of new bossa, fusions, and jazz shuffles from around the world. Compilations should be left to the very few people that can really put them together, like this man. Any way, this essential sampler features four previously unreleased slammin electronic jazz-fusions that'll be sure to make you say something like "Holy Kaka, this shit's baad!" This expression works, for example with the phenomenal Vogado Project's 'Um?', a string-laden, break-arge basslined, house-not-house beats, sophisticated ghetto jazz-funk filth workout. Check the outstanding Mitchell & Dewbury, and Moonstarr & John Kong featuring Coolhandluke, and get ready to be sick all over yourself. Unquestionably essential.
