    Smile! It's Skeletons

    Skeleton1_medium

Do Right Music is proud to announce the release of Nostalgia 77's alter-ego "Skeletons" album Smile. Originally a private pressing of 300 Vinyl LPs, Do Right has now obtained exclusive rights to the vinyl release which will hit stores on September 13th in Europe. Digital/CD formats available through Tru Thoughts Records.

Benedic Lamdin is a musician, producer and engineer from London, UK. He has produced a string of LP's as Nostalgia 77 for Tru Thoughts Recording. This time though he has summoned a new style of work with a heavily African influenced record: inspired by Fela Kuti's minor-key Afrobeat moves, Mulatu Astatke's Ethio-groove and what sounds like some vaguely Afro-jazzy Italian sound library joint.

Smile, was almost entirely written by Lamdin, whilst actually being played by various musicians as they passed through his studio. The result is an incredible musical collage that has taken on its own identity.

    Hooked on Maylee Todd

    Dr042cd_hooked_1400x1400_medium

We are pleased to announce the release of Maylee Todd's debut album 'Choose Your Own Adventure", available in stores and online June 22nd.

Maylee Todd, one of Canada’s most exciting new music acts, is spreading an infectious energy around town. With the vocal chords of an angel, charismatic stage presence and a string of soulful pop tunes, this bright, young spark is turning heads by reinventing tropical grooves.

If you’ve been anywhere near a TV or film screen in recent months, you’ll be familiar with Maylee’s velvety vocals from the track ‘For What it’s Worth’ on the Telus commercial. And she’s also leant her voice to Toronto's Woodhands – a much-celebrated collaboration that has left both fans and music journalists hungry for more.

    Heavy Falls The Night

    Dr041pakshot_medium

Do Right is proud to announce the release of Elizabeth Shepherd’s third studio album ‘Heavy Falls The Night’ on March 16, 2010. Elizabeth’s debut ‘Start To Move’ (2006) and follow-up ‘Parkdale’ (2008) were both JUNO nominated and described as “pushing the boundaries of jazz”. With her new album, she pushes well past those boundaries to carve out her own niche of smart, sophisticated and adventurous music.

It’s also the first album that Elizabeth’s produced herself. The album was recorded over 15 months in Toronto, mixed by studio ace Scott Lake (Sam Roberts, City and Colour), and features some of Canada’s finest players, including long-time collaborators Scott Kemp (bass) and Colin Kingsmore (drums).

Elizabeth's rhythmically intricate, groove-oriented tunes, sincere lyrics and distinct, soulful voice have earned her a worldwide following, and her fans will certainly not be disappointed by the explorations on this new record. Critics, hipsters and music aficionados from London to Tokyo have been spreading the word for a few years now, and will surely continue to embrace her music. But more importantly, with 'Heavy Falls the Night', Elizabeth Shepherd is destined to reach music lovers everywhere.

She will be playing Tokyo's Cotton Club from February 24th to 26th, coinciding with the Japanese release of Heavy Falls the Night. North American touring will begin on March 13 at Glenn Gould Studios in Toronto and run through the summer of 2010, while European dates are scheduled for the fall.

    Why Heidi Happy & D-Sisive

    Heidsisive_medium

One of our favourite Hip-Hop albums of the year has to be D-Sisive's 'Let The Children Die' (Urbnet). First, he got the Juno Award nod, then came the Polaris Music Prize's long-list, and most recently, SOCAN's Echo Songwriting Award nomination for his single 'Nobody With A Notepad'. D-Sisive is on every critics list and every chart out there.

When he came by the Do Right! HQ one day to tell us how much he loves Heidi Happy's 'Flowers, Bird, And Home' album, we didn't expect him to return with a duet version of 'Why'!

"All it took was one listen and I was instantly in love with 'Why'. The lyrics are so harsh, yet delivered so beautifully. I had to do something with it. I'm known to get personal with my music, but have never had the opportunity to write about relationships. This was the perfect opportunity," said D-Sisive.

Augmented by a powerful back-beat produced by Muneshine, D-Sisive's verse flows effortlessly between Heidi's chorus, transforming the song into a powerful duet of lost love from two points of view.

    Parkdale Wrap-Up

    Wrapup_medium

After the release of Parkdale, Elizabeth Shepherd has known one long year of travels - from Japan to Europe, to the U.S. and across Canada. She will now be settling down for a brief hiatus from the road, in order to finish her upcoming album. With no title as of yet, this album already boasts nuance, subtlety and an accessibility that is bound to keep her safely outside of categorization .

Join us at Hugh's Room on Wednesday July 22nd for a wrap-up show with the elizabeth shepherd quartet, featuring Scott Kemp on the bass, Colin Kingsmore on drums, and Roman Tome on percussion. And who knows - she may just grace you with a sampling of what's in the works from our local, rising jazz/singer-songwriter star.
